Regrow Carrot Tops in Water

Regrowing a carrot top is an easy and fun introduction to the way plants grow! One thing to be aware of is that you will not get another carrot (the edible root of the carrot plant) from growing it this way, which is important to tell the kids to avoid disappointment. Theoretically, if you grow the plant long enough, you might be able to get seeds that you could then plant and would turn into carrots, but it would take a while!

• Shallow Bowl
• Water
• Carrot (with greens)
• Otter Observation Sheets

1. Cut the top inch (~2.5 cm) of the carrot off, leaving the greens attached. You may trim them down to an inch or two.
2. Fill the shallow bowl with around an inch of water
3. Nestle the carrot top in the bowl, leaving just the top and greens sticking out (you may need to adjust the water level)
4. Set the glass in a light but not sunny window and change the water daily
5. Record your observations every few days to see what changes as the plant grows.
6. Roots and new leaf growth should appear within a few days
7. After a few weeks, there should be enough root structure to transfer the carrot to a container of potting soil where it can continue to grow.
